What to Consider Before Buying Patio Furniture

By Katie Houdek

If you’re about to deck out your porch or patio there are a few things you should consider before making your decision. Aside from finding something that appeals to your sense of style make sure to investigate maintenance concerns and really think about how you want to use your outdoor space.

Research

Don’t

Just head to the store and pick the first one you like.

Do

While decking out your patio can be really exciting it’s important to do your homework before getting ahead of yourself. Measure your patio space. Think about how you’ll be using the space. Will you be hosting weekly barbecues or do you plan to just lay out and soak up the sun? These different uses require different types of furniture and you need to make sure you know what you can accommodate before you pull out your wallet.

Budget

Don’t

Save on the final price by buying the cheapest furniture set available.

Do

Realize that outdoor patio furniture is subjected to all sorts of weather conditions: rain, wind, sun, snow, and dirt. By all means you can buy that cheap plastic furniture but you’re probably going to have to replace after 2 years or so. In the long run you aren’t saving yourself any money when you’re constantly replacing your furniture.

Maintenance

Don’t

Bring your patio furniture home and assume that’s the end of the story.

Do

Learn what type of maintenance your furniture needs and follow through on its care. You don’t want you porch or patio looking worn and unkempt within a few seasons. Metal furniture needs attention to rust and paint. Wood furniture may require oiling or the occasional coat of stain and water repellent. Wicker tends to need a coat of paint every few years. Know what your furniture requires and keep it looking fresh and clean!

Style

Don’t

Exclude furniture that is accented with fabric and cushions you don’t like.

Do

When shopping for patio furniture don’t exclude a piece or set you love because you hate the color or pattern of the cushions. Remember that you can always replace them or recover them. If you buy a good set of patio furniture you’ll probably be replacing them at some point regardless. Find a set that meets your needs and remember that you can tailor it to fit you taste.

My wife and I love to entertain guests in our backyard. We are hoping to further beautify our garden and porch with some new furniture. I love the idea of not necessarily worrying too much about the cushions when shopping for patio furniture. If you love the chair, but hate the cushion, you can always replace it. I will remember that as I am searching.

It really is important to keep your patio furniture well maintained and not to just leave it to collect dust. After all, your patio furniture is going to be constantly exposed to the elements since it is sitting outside. Because of this, you want to do what you can to protect your furniture, especially when it starts to storm outside. http://www.watergardenwarehouse.com.au/products-cat/furniture-accessories/
