As spring approaches, we want to feature a project most of us avoid… the ever daunting garage! Here are 4 ways to help you recover your garage and when it’s all done you may even have room to park the car. These garage organization techniques will have you in top shape in no time!
Shelves and Cabinets:
Many of us use the garage for additional storage. Shelving or cabinets increase the use of space, keeping it organized and out of the way. This will allow you to store items on the sides of your garage or even above your vehicles. It can really maximize the amount of space you have available. You may choose simple open shelves or high-end garage organizers with coordinating colors and locks on certain cabinets. They add to the overall appearance of the garage, especially in high-end homes.
Refreshing the Garage Walls and Ceiling:
Often, homeowners want to update their walls. The ideas stem from newer high-end homes, with walls finished to look like another room of the home. In older homes, it is common to have un-textured and unpainted walls. By repairing the tape on the walls and ceiling, adding some texture and painting the garage walls, an entirely fresh look will occur.
Refinishing Your Floor:
Older homes usually have stained concrete on the garage floors. Oil stains and other blemishes create a dirty and unmaintained appearance. A quick and relatively inexpensive finish for garage floors is to have it painted or stained. Epoxy is a more heavy duty and durable coating than paint and is resistant to staining. It comes in a variety of styles and colors and the little flecks add to the appearance of the new flooring.
Suggestions for a Garage Conversion:
If you really want more room in your home, you may consider converting all or part of your garage to a usable space for your home. There are many ideas and it really depends on the use for the family. You may need a work-out room, additional pantry or storage, a bedroom or even an office.
We recently “bumped out” a laundry room into the garage, creating usable space for the active family. Instead of a small space for just the washer and dryer, they now have an additional room, including cabinets and sink for hand-wash, a desk for sewing or computer work, and plenty of storage.
We extended the kitchen flooring into the laundry room and additional room. Since the garage has extended length, there is still plenty of room in their garage for parking.
